coffee chromatics

When I went back to McSconsin on my first 4 days off since Chrimbo to see my sister's new place, and my niece and nephew (and to get software I had left there), I also picked up my french press and Mr. Coffee brand coffee grinder so that I could make use of the huge kilo bag of Jamaican Blue Mountain my parents sent me after their trip to, yes you guessed it, Jamaica. I made first use of all three for breakfast^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hunch today... well, right now really. At 4pm. Ok, 4:05pm.

You're supposed to put in 2 scoops (heaping tablespoons) of coarsely ground coffee per tiny european coffee cup. That amounts to 16 scoops for a full carafe which holds 8 tiny euro coffee cups = 3 american coffee cups. Then you pour in boiling water and wait. Ohhhhh how you must wait. Wait wait wait wait, while the smells fill the room, and the prospects of rich, earthy, acid-free, unscorched coffee fill your mind. Four long minutes they want you to wait before you depress the plunger and pour that black gold into your cup and down your gaping maw.

But four minutes isn't long enough.

I went to check on it when the timer went off. I bent down to look through the brewing liquid, and I could see light on the other side. I said, "Noooooo, nooooooot daaaaaark enooooooough," kind of like Smeagol would talk about his preciooooous, and left the room.

A healthy coffee-brown wasn't the colour I was looking for. I wanted it blacker than Guinness, blacker than obsidian, blacker than coal. I'm not only talking about coffee so dark that I can't see light through it... I'm talking coffee so dark that the light which enters it never escapes its unholy center.

Another four minutes of steeping, and I am satisfied. Let me give it a try.

Oh yes. Oh god yes.

I'm totally tripping balls from that coffee still. I feel weird as hell.

It does get darker when you press it down you know? But I applaud you for being one of the few who doesn't drink wuss coffee.

Sweet Jesus, that sounds good. I'm heading to Hawaii in a couple months, maybe I should pack my french press and a grinder for all of the Kona goodness I'm going to ingest while I'm there.
