beer blogging

evidenceThis is probably the most on topic thing i've ever blogged about, for me and for this site. Maybe it's the grain?

My roomie John and I bought cans of Irish stout for St. Patties Day. John got Guinness while I bought the equally delicious Murphy's. These are both highly enjoyable from the draught can.

Something strange is going on though. The can's are the exact same size but while my Murphy's can says 1 PINT (16 FL. OZ.), John's Guinness can says 14.9 FL. OZ.

Ok, so no big deal, right? They just don't fill the Guinness can up as much, right? But the box the Guinness can's come in is clearly labeled as containing 8 x 16 fl oz (1 pint) cans.

16 != 14.9

Having lived in London for six months it occured to me that English units in England are sometimes different than English units in America. (Crazy, I know!) So I went and looked up the fluid ounce. Indeed, 1 fl. oz. U.K. = 0.96 fl. oz. U.S.

Problem solved? Is one can printed with U.K. units and the other U.S. units? Well, 16.0 * 0.96 = 15.36.

15.36 != 14.9

So, nope. The mystery continues...

Maybe they were just filled with different amounts? Empty one of each into measuring cups.

That doesn't change the fact that the box says 8 x 16 and the can says 14.9 now does it?

Guinness screwed up... John went to buy another case of cans and the printing error has been corrected.

actually, i believe that guinness includes a little button-y thing at the bottom of their cans that makes the stout behave more like draught guinness -- thus it's better to get guinness in a can than in a bottle. the button could account for the missing 1.1 fl oz.

Well the box no longer says 8 x 16... it says 8 x 14.9 now.

And Murphy's has the button, too.

Mmmm, it says 16 oz cans, not 16 oz of beer-

hahahahah, that'd be a great marketing device. Questionable legality, but amazing.
