a penitent whaler

glowing seasJust imagine in the superstitious days of old when the earth was flat, and a sailor who ventured too far out to sea would at best fall off the edge into nothingness and at worse be eaten by any number of giant sea monsters. Besides vast flats of drifting sargassum that would catch boats with windless sails; besides whirlpools; besides colossal squid, that by an even conservative stretch of the imagination were most definitely larger and more abundant before the effects of man; besides all of that, just imagine the kinds of stories they must have come to dock with when they sailed at night into swaths of ocean aglow in every direction as far as the eye can see.

And then that fateful night
We had you in our sight
After twenty months at sea

Your starboard flank abeam
I was getting my muskets clean
When came this rumbling from beneath

The ocean shook
The sky went black
And the captain quailed

And before us grew
The angry jaws
Of a giant whale

Don't know how I survived
The crew all was chewed alive
I must have slipped between his teeth

But, O! What providence!
What divine intelligence!
That you should survive
As well as me

It gives my heart
Great joy
To see your eyes fill with fear

So lean in close
And I will whisper
The last words you'll hear

Hey, by the way! I *finally* picked up a Le Tigre album. They are fucking awesome-- exactly what I like. Why didn't I listen to you sooner???

Czech out Emiliana Torrini... beautiful singer/songwriter. Probably more up your alley than Feist.
