what's up my ninja?

May 3, 2006 @ 16:27

Ok so various news outlets have been covering this story about Hatsumi, the last surviving student of the last fighting ninja master Takamatsu Toshitsugu... and how Hatsumi is a ninja... and they interviewed him... and it is really awesome... dot dot dot.

That is all well and good, but some of the deep cuts, some of the links to links to links from these stories, reveal some very interesting ninja facts that you may not have otherwise been aware of:

"Hatsumi started by training Okinawa Karate and Judo, and became expert on Judo during the 50s. At that time he trained US soldiers at a military base in Japan, and after realizing that even a Judo master kan be defeated if the attacker is strong enough and using tricks, he started searching for something better. He found it in Takamatsu Toshitsugu who became his teacher."

"By experiencing the confrontation of danger, the transcendence of fear or injury or death, and a working knowledge of individual personal powers and limitations, the practioner of ninjutsu can gain the strength and invincibility..."

DUDE! Invincibility?! So, a Ninjitsu master can kick a Karate and/or Judo master's ass! I knew ninjas were awesome, but that is REALLY awesome.

"13 year old Judo expert [Hatsumi] flung away 60 gangsters..."

DUDE! Hatsumi was only 13 and he kicked 60 Japanese gangsters asses. It was in the newspaper. That makes it true.

Finally, how about some proof that a 5th level Ninjitsu master (it goes up to 15th level) can dodge a sword with his eyes closed. Actually, that is the requirement for being a 5th level ninja:

"Going for his fifth-level ranking is Phil White of England, who kneels on the floor with his eyes closed. Behind him stands Hatsumi, clutching a padded wooden sword that he plans to bring down on White's head. If White - with his eyes still closed - manages to dodge the sword, he passes; if not, he takes home some bumps."

John Bolton, (the USA's ambassador to the United Nations) is a nutter.

And, to steal a joke, Yosemite Sam called. He wants his moustache back.

someone else's story

Apr 24, 2006 @ 09:28

Unfortunately, it isn't my story, but I thought I'd share anyway...

So Kate at work here was just telling me how she was downtown yesterday morning for some breakfast at the apparently delicious Hell's Kitchen, and she was reading the Citypages' article about Al Franken while standing in line waiting for a table. A cab pulls up, and who gets out but Al Franken. Kate pulled a face, and Al says, "What are you reading?"

"I'm reading an article about you!" Kate says.

"Oh? The Citypages one? I haven't read that yet," Al says as he walks up to Kate and starts reading the article over her shoulder.

mill city monster

Apr 23, 2006 @ 21:01

The ruins of the mills are lit up at night now. I was sitting down there alone in the dark waiting for the lights to come on, and I had my eyes closed so I could focus on the noise. There are two very distinct things you notice down there.

1. The water coming out from the main tail race is pretty random and made up of many surges.

B. There is something causing these incredibly low frequency booms. Either so quiet or so low that they are very difficult to hear.

I opened my eyes and the lights were on. You could see far into the tunnels and tail races, but they went much deeper under the city than the lights would allow you to see. This one tunnel in particular has the very peculiar feature of an ancient wooden bridge suspended over the murky, stagnant water. A bridge leading into the depths. Something very big is living back there. I heard its horrible decade of arms splash in the water just out of sight. I was actually terrified for a brief second, then I regained my wits and remembered they had constructed a hefty cage of metal between me and the beast. That's right. Those gates are not there to keep you out, they are there to keep It in.

I'd hate to be living in one of those mills-cum-lofts built over the tunnels whose many decrepit sub-basements interweave with the waters below. Surely what foulness lies beneath will someday find one of the gates or doors rusted through, and will slither and slunk its way up into the dwellings above, snatching people through the drains in their tubs.

Oh I shiver at the thought of what doom awaits our city once this creature is loose. It will crawl its way up stream to our watershed. The lucky ones will be devoured from the inside by one of the many hatchlings spewed forth as eggs from Its womb and swallowed down in our tap water. The unlucky will live to do Its evil bidding. We, Its tentacly extention on land, our minds controlled by Its obsidian ink.

Dark are these days. Blacker than the waters from which our fate awaits us. Always watching with Its two gigantic eyes. So large are they, that It can see straight through to the very heart of Men.
